Cheap web designs

In difficult economic times it's important to get your web site looked after as cost-effectively as possible. I tend to focus on smaller scale, cheaper designs rather than get involved in large scale web projects. Most of my customers are small businesses looking for low cost, functional, navigable web pages and are not interested in Flash-animated "artistic" sites, which cannot be produced as cheaply and also tend not to perform so well on search engines. Some other designers will also try and cut corners by using commercial web templates to keep their designs as cheap to produce as possible. Unfortunately this can make the design look cheap too because of the popularity of these boilerplate sites around the web. I don't use templates other than perhaps as a starting point for a discussion about site colours and layouts, but your finished site will be a bespoke creation just for you. Also some companies outsource designs using cheap labour in India which is something I don't do either. If you are at all bothered about the technical way in which sites are built, this article about "CSS or table based design" (which covers the topic better than I ever could) explains why a table based approach is still used where appropriate. Last but by no means least, I adopt a personal approach to web design and regularly deal with customers who have litle or no knowledge of the internet, so am more than happy to take time to explain everything in layman's terms where necessary.

Web designs
Priced on a per-page basis, plus a set-up fee. A "page" is roughly an A4 equivalent. Price includes as much text and graphics as can be fitted on the page, although large amounts of image or text scanning, coding (e.g. Javascript), and animations, are charged extra at the hourly rate. As a rough guide, the cheapest 3 page static site would be £235+VAT, 5 pages £325+VAT, and 10 pages £550+VAT. Content-managed/dynamic or e-commerce sites tend to start at around £500+VAT (additional software costs are incurred). Remember, if you qualify for Connecting Somerset grant funding then the cost can be up to 50% cheaper.

Web space
Starting from 10MB of web space managed on your behalf by myself, for £85+VAT per annum. I buy the web space in bulk to enable me to re-sell it at the cheapest prices to customers. Plenty of space for basic sites and some clients run two or three static sites within this quota at no extra charge. For larger sites, 50MB or 100MB chunks are available from £170+VAT per annum.

Domain name registration, hosting and administration
A two-yearly fee of £60+VAT covers everything to do with your domain name, from finding a suitable one (if required), registering it through the appropriate authority, hosting it and setting up the email routing (including spam filtering), to acting as domain administrator for ICANN or Nominet matters.
